Prompt Number Four

BLOG PROMPT FOUR: Cultural Critique

"Four Co2untries" from Gas Zappers (2006) by Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung

PLEASE ANSWER BY POSTING COMMENTS.

NOTE: New York artist Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung, born in Hong Kong, is a provocateur. His work is intensely politically charged, harshly critiquing politicians, celebrities, popular culture and media, using garish - often graphic - imagery that is intended to elicit a strong reaction.

Play a round or two of "Four Co2untries". Why do you think the artist formatted this cultural critique as a game?

  1. I believe that the artist formatted his cultural critique as a game in order to spread that his climate quick fixes for climate change are possible and somewhat easy. Having an interactive experience probably leaves his audience with a better understanding of what he's trying to push. They have to go through the experience personally and witness the imagery and message pushed by the artist-hopefully leaving a more lasting impression that change is possible and is somewhat easy.

  3. I really enjoy Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung's approach. He seems very focused on the current events or happenings we see both in the US and around the world. The collage-style is incredibly inspiring, because it's something that can be recreated fairly easily. The provocativeness of the pieces just makes the viewer think a little harder, because obviously the artist is aiming to get some sort of point across. His work targets virtually everyone at one point or another, too, so he's not looking to showcase only one person or group (and their faults or whatever it may be). Overall I'd say art like this is very understandable today, especially among newer generations.

I believe Tin-Kin Hung formatted his cultural critique as a game because he wanted a certain level of interaction that doesn't necessarily just occur by looking at an art piece.
